At California Safe Driver, we believe that when it comes to safe driving, education and awareness save lives. That is why our highly trained public safety professionals provide the National Safety Council's Defensive Driving Courses, Alive at 25® and "ADoD" / Attitudinal Dynamics of Driving.

Why Is Our Online Learning So Effective?

After much research on how best to support an effective and interactive curriculum to support our cognitive-behavioral-based courses, we have chosen to incorporate the Kahoot! Program.

Evidence shows that impactful learning includes social, emotional, and academic integration. That's why we facilitate curriculums utilizing an interactive, cognitive-behavior-therapy-based approach to learning. And we make them fun too!

How do we know what works?

We use the best law enforcement experienced, National Safety Council trained facilitators, teach them how to use cognitive behavioral therapy strategies, and create a highly interactive classroom community. Students become active learners, and facilitators check learning throughout the class. Our well trained and experienced facilitators are sensitive to the students' learning process, and care deeply about their success. Additionally, at the conclusion of each course, we check students' knowledge and engage them in anonymous open ended course evaluations. These evaluations are used to continually monitor the courses' success in helping students identify and change their behaviors; as well as reveal any areas where we may need to improve.

Alive at 25®

California Court Recognized • 5th Edition • English and Spanish

Alive at 25® is a 4.5-hour live, instructor-led Zoom educational program for drivers ages 16 to 24, a population with elevated crash and fatality risk compared with older drivers. Developed by the National Safety Council and used nationwide, the program is designed to improve judgment, reinforce accountability, reduce repeat violations, improve long-term driving behavior, and promote public safety.

Our Alive at 25® course specifically addresses California traffic laws, violations, driver responsibility, and the real-world consequences of unsafe driving decisions.

Using practical concepts from Choice Theory, which emphasizes personal responsibility and sound decision-making, students examine how attitudes, behaviors, and everyday choices directly affect driving safety, legal outcomes, and future opportunities.

While traditional driver education focuses primarily on vehicle operation and traffic laws, Alive at 25® addresses the behavioral factors commonly associated with collisions and violations, including inexperience, distracted driving, peer influence, poor judgment, impulsive decision-making, and underestimating risk.

Using an evidence-informed approach and interactive learning tools such as Kahoot! to reinforce instruction, verify comprehension, and increase participation, the course provides practical methods students can apply immediately to make safer and more lawful choices behind the wheel.

Instruction is delivered by experienced professionals with law enforcement backgrounds who provide consistent, structured, and accountable education focused on successful completion and safer future conduct.

ADoD / Attitudinal Dynamics of Driving

California Court Recognized • 5th Edition • English

ADoD is an 8-hour educational program developed by the National Safety Council. This evidence-based course uses cognitive behavioral therapy strategies to correct unsafe driving attitudes, improve judgment, reinforce accountability, and develop responsible decision-making habits.

The program serves drivers of all ages, including individuals referred or ordered by a court, probation department, or other agency. California courts and agencies, as well as jurisdictions nationwide, utilize ADoD for diversion, educational sentencing, and driver improvement matters involving traffic violations, repeat traffic offenders, criminal Vehicle Code violations, alcohol-related offenses, and other conduct requiring corrective education.

Drawing in part from the principles of Choice Theory, participants examine how attitudes and choices affect legal, financial, and personal consequences while learning practical methods to accept responsibility and make safer future decisions.

Instruction covers defensive driving principles, DUI awareness, review of traffic laws, risk recognition, collision-prevention strategies, and the exercise of sound judgment in everyday driving situations. The course also incorporates the Kahoot! learning platform, which supports engagement and participation through principles associated with Self-Determination Theory.

The course includes a self-assessment survey and structured action plan designed to help participants identify and change risky driving behavior, reduce recidivism, and promote safer, lawful future conduct.

TDIC uses adaptive, self-paced learning that allows participants to complete the program around work schedules while receiving scenario-based instruction relevant to commercial driving conditions.

Consistent with 49 CFR § 384.226, TDIC may not be used to mask, defer, or otherwise alter the reporting of a commercial driver conviction.

Learning Theory

Kahoot! draws upon ideas from the Self-Determination Theory (SDT) of motivation, developed by Richard Ryan, PhD and Edward Deci, PhD. SDT states that there are two different types of motivation, extrinsic and intrinsic. Intrinsic motivation takes place when an individual engages in an activity because they find it truly enjoyable, whereas extrinsic motivation takes place when an individual engages in an activity to achieve an outcome (for example to receive a reward, good grades, money, etc.). Kahoot! incorporates both types of motivation in its design. Read more about the successes of Kahoot!
